Are interventions successful?
Research suggests that interventions can be highly effective. It appears that one factor which may increase the likelihood of success is the participation of an employer.

Is now the time? If your current situation has you concerned enough that you are exploring this option – it’s time. If you are concerned about someone you love, nothing can be gained by waiting. Crisis comes and crisis goes, but with the disease of addiction, we don’t get to choose the consequences our loved ones will face the next time.

Who performs interventions?
Interventions are most often provided by treatment programs or individuals who are counselors with experience treating drug addiction and alcoholism.

What are the credentials of Interventionists?
There is no required training for intervention specialists and no accrediting body. Frequently interventionists have graduate degrees in counseling, MSW, LPC or other degrees. However, when screening an intervention specialists this may not be the best way to determine their ability to provide quality service.

Does AA do interventions?
Though Alcoholics can find "sponsors" to offer support and guidance in recovery, it does not provide intervention.

Why can't I do an intervention on my own?
Frequently, by the time people decide an intervention is necessary they have had numerous conversations with the alcoholic or addict about the problem. Sometimes these have turned into disagreements and arguments. Because denial is part of the disease, it may help the addict grasp the seriousness of the situation.

Who should be involved?
The intervention specialist will help you to determine this. Family members, employees, and friends may all be appropriate for the intervention.

When do we set up treatment?
Treatment should be set up prior to the intervention meeting at which the alcoholic/addict is confronted. Typically, the window of opportunity is short. The ideal situation would be for the person to leave straight from the intervention to treatment. This way they do not have time to change their mind. Many intervention specialists have good connections with treatment providers and can help you to arrange treatment. At the very least they should be able to provide you with a list of treatment centers.

What if the intervention fails?
Sometimes, in spite of the best effort, an addict/alcoholic will continue to refuse treatment. It is crucial that any consequences which have been set by the participants are up held.
