Living with a drug
or alcohol addicted person is not easy. Their
actions impact all of those around them. Sometimes
their use leads to the loss of employment, financial
security and even homes. Though alcohol and drug
abuse don't cause violence there is a high correlation
between the two. Even when the effects are not so
dramatic life with the alcoholic addict can be difficult
with the non addicted individuals in the family being
forced to take on extra responsibilities, sometimes
finding themselves in the position of lying or covering
up for the alcoholic/addict.
These are experiences which are common among families
with a drug or alcohol addicted individual. It is
important to get support to deal with these situations.
Fortunately, there is a support group for the family and
loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. Al-Anon/Alateen,
which is frequently confused with Alcoholics Anonymous,
is actually for the family members of the
alcoholic/addict. These groups are free and occur
on a nearly daily basis in many communities. For
more information on where to find an Al-anon meeting in
your area call 1-888-4AL-ANON
